Opening Notes

"Only in Russia is poetry respected - it gets people killed. Is there anywhere else where poetry is so common a motive for murder?"
-
Osip Mandelstam, 1891-1938

David Matas and David Kilgour, authors of Bloody Harvest: The killing of Falun Gong for their organs, continue to travel around the world speaking about human rights, specifically issues in China. In The Spotlight

Poets from the Buffalo, NY area and the Niagara region of Ontario share their meditations on death and dying in The Shadow's Imprint: Poetic Reflections on Death. As Karen Lewis writes in the Preface, "This book is a gathering of friends and a celebration of community."

Torture in the Age of Fear is a contemporary look at the practice of torture and a guideline on how to combat it. In the book's Introduction the author, Dr. Ezat Mossallanejed, himself a survivor of torture, writes: "I hope that (the book) will contribute towards the global efforts to expose and eradicate torture on the one hand, and the need to rehabilitate its survivors on the other. I cherish the hope that, sooner rather than later, torture will be eliminated from the globe."
