This is a wonderful opportunity for Montgomery readers to experience a writer’s creative journey. Canadian author Lucy Maude Montgomery wrote the novel, Rilla of Ingleside, over a two-year period after the end of World War I, and it was published in 1939. The original manuscript contained over 500 handwritten pages, plus 71 pages of “notes”. In 1999, the manuscript was acquired by the University of Guelph Archival & Special Collections. Montgomery scholar Elizabeth Waterston provides an introduction to the book, which includes a readable transcription of the original manuscript, several handwritten facsimile pages, and Montgomery’s notes.
