Creeds and Remedies: The Feminine and Religion in Waterloo Region
by April Bulmer

Publisher: Serengeti Press
Genre: religion
Format: trade paperback; 100 pages
Price: $20.00

Through research and information gleaned via in-person interviews, April Bulmer explores a variety of religious beliefs and spiritual practices from the female perspective. She offers an overview of the many religions found in the area: Christianity including Old Order Mennonite and Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Wicca, Paganism and Spiritualism. Readers will learn a surprising amount of information in these informative and moving vignettes.

The book is in two sections. The first offers the reader personal encounters with a wide variety of women who subscribe to a faith belief or who provide details of their religious journeys. These encounters are told as short stories, or as transcripts of direct interviews, or in verse format. The women don’t shy away from their unhappy or violent lives and many entries are difficult to read. But all describe the universal longing for a belief in something greater than ourselves. The second section reflects the personal religious journey of the author, told in verse, centred around many of Waterloo Region’s towns, rivers and parks.
