Feats of Weakness

Feats of Weakness
by April Bulmer

Genre: fiction; short stories
Format: trade paperback; 272 pages
Price: $19.95

Finalist in the 2022 Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the Spirituality category.

This collection of short prose and stories presents the author’s personal and reflective pieces on the relationship between spirituality and illness. Bulmer says that her intention was to “place sickness in cultural, contemporary and even historical settings.” Most, but not all, sections begin with a woman’s name; each story has its own title and introduces a character(s) commenting/reflecting on their reactions to various health issues that have an impact upon them or someone close to them.
For example, in the one-page story, Heart Conditions, 94-year-old Mable recounts how she lives with her daughter who is not well; she suffers from a broken heart – “broken by my husband”. In Ernie Flips His Wig, three men meeting in the restroom react to the man washing his dead wife’s wig at the sink.
